“Anyone who collects and restores these vintage motorcycles is preserving a piece of Americana that would have ordinarily been lost forever”.

The author’s first motorcycle was a Yamaha two-stroke, purchased when he was 18 years old, in New York City. Soon he discovered that a two-stroke didn’t quite exude the image he was after. More importantly he realized that riding a Yamaha, or for that matter any motorcycle in New York City, wasn’t conducive with a long, accident free life. Ultimately his educational pursuits took him in a direction where the frequent or even infrequent use of his motorcycle became a challenge. That avocation was put on hold.

It was not until the mid 1980’s when he settled in Denver and his life and career became more stable that he took up riding again, this time with a four stroke Suzuki 750 shaft-driven Intruder. While an excellent motorcycle, he realized that it too was missing something. Then one day in the late 80’s he entered a Harley-Davidson dealership and he caught the bug. He not only purchased a rider, but began his passion collecting first year antique Harley-Davidson motorcycles and all things vintage Harley-Davidson.

He has worked on and ridden all the motorcycles in the collection. In some cases doing the restoration alone or with his son Zach, or just adding some finishing touches to the bikes. “Collecting Harley-Davidson motorcycles is a passion” he says, “Unless you appreciate motorcycles they are just another piece of rusting metal”. He goes on to say “Anyone who collects and restores these vintage motorcycles is preserving a piece of Americana that would have ordinarily been lost forever”.

Numerous motorcycle models from the book are also featured on David Uhl’s paintings:
36 EL Knucklehead - “Rose”, The Women of Harley-Davidson; “Pinstriping”, Art of the Motorcycle
49 EL Hydra-Glide - “Custom Paint”, Art of the Motorcycle
1930 V - “Stella”, The Women of Harley-Davidson
1914 10 F - “Stranger in Town”, Sturgis Commemorative
1929 D - “Vivian Bales”, Historical Works

The book is now available for purchase through Uhl Studios.

Roger and Emily, photograph by Kim Cook

Roger and his wife Emily spontaneously joined us for a one day photo shoot for the new Uhl Works apparel catalog (www.uhlworks.com), adding a great vibe and fun to the day. They looked incredible and very natural wearing the new Uhl Works t-shirt designs.

Roger is recognized in the bike world as one of the best custom bike designer. Roger has built a number of incredible bikes and has always had a very creative and artistic approach. In 1984, he bought his first Harley - a 1984 Softail custom. He stripped it down to the frame, raked it, chromed it, painted it, etc. until it wasn’t even recognizable. Roger had many more “project bikes”, and in 1991 built the first Harley type custom bike to run a 170-17 rear tire. Roger pretty much decided at that point that there was nothing he hadn’t done to a stock Harley frame, and in 1992 began designing and building his own style and brand of motorcycle frames. He also invested in a CNC Mill and small lathe and started building his own billet components to go along with the frames.

People went wild when they saw Roger’s frames, and it was soon obvious that Roger’s hobby could turn into a full blown career. Roger’s creativity and design genius have produced many different styles of frames, parts and unbelievable motorcycles over the years including Roger’s signature design, BBW’s oil-in frame/drop seat style chassis which marked a revolutionary change in the style of custom motorcycles being offered to the general public. The designs were so unique that Roger Bourget obtained a U.S. Patent for it.

Roger is much respected in the industry, and his name is a trademark for high quality, performance oriented, uniquely styled motorcycles. We were very excited and thankful to have Roger and Emily part of our photo shoot project for Uhl Works.

Dennis usually limits himself to building one to two bikes per year, and David’s bike consumed him the entire year of 2006. The bike was named “Black Axe”, after as Dennis explains, “its chopped-up gas tank” that boasts its own artistic design. The majority of the motorcycle consists of historical and unique parts dating from 1940 or earlier.

“Baby Doll” is the latest piece in David Uhl’s “Aviation and Military” collection. This collection features artworks connected with American aviation and military history. “Baby Doll” was also part of the more complex project that initially involved preparing artwork for a model airplane. Participating in this project was extremely fun for Uhl Studios – and we want to share our experience with you.

In March 2010, Brian O’Meara and Bonnie Murray commissioned Uhl Studios to paint a pin up girl on Brian’s model airplane – which measures over 8 feet long and has a wing span of 8 feet. It flies at 200 mph and travels a football field in under two seconds. It has a real jet turbine and burns Jet-A fuel. This model airplane is a replica of a F-84 Thunderstreak, which was manufactured in the 1950s. Four of these airplanes were once loaned by the U.S. Airforce to the Royal Dutch Air Show Team for two weeks. Brian’s model airplane already included the original Dutch Air Show Team markings, and now he wanted Uhl Studios to add a pin up girl and the airplane’s original name Baby Doll to it.

Brian O’Meara’s model plane: a F-84 Thunderstreak

The pin up girl chosen to be painted on Brian’s model airplane was inspired by Gil Elvgren’s 1963 artwork “Suzanne”. Gil Elvgren was one of the most important pin-up and glamour artists of the twentieth century. He was a master of portraying feminine attributes and his work continuously provides modern artists with inspiration.

The Original “Suzanne” by Gil Elvgren - 1963

This project inspired David and Danial to create a new fine art painting for the “Aviation and Military” collection. Brian and Bonnie were invited to take part and were very enthusiastic about the idea. They both agreed to pose as models for the piece: Brian as a painter and Bonnie as a pin up girl. Brian provided his model airplane and also his grandfather’s 1935 Ford two-ton dump truck to be featured in the painting. Having all the necessary elements (models & props) and an idea in mind, David Uhl was ready to start work on this new piece of art.

Dennis Goodson, a good friend of Uhl Studios and an incredibly talented metal artisan, made a giant stainless steel sculpture of an eagle for the Uhl Studios building. It’s located on the top of the 2nd floor, right above David’s painting studio. Since installation of the giant raptor in August 2009, it has been a subject of interest of many Uhl Studios guests and the neighborhood.

Uhl Studios commissioned Dennis to make a replica of the eagles that grace the Chrysler Building in New York City. It took Dennis months to recreate the eagle from historical photographs. Now, the results of his incredible craftsmanship skills can be admired in Golden, Colorado.

Some facts about the eagle:
- The eagle was handmade from 16ga stainless steel sheet.
- The head measures a little more than 5 feet long, and about 3 feet at its mounting point.
- The wingspan is a little over 20 feet long.

To inquire about his custom metal art works, Dennis Goodson of Fantasy in Iron can be reached at: 303-455-4054

David Uhl has recreated another iconic moment in motorcycle history on his canvas, J.C. Pappy Hoel on this beloved Indian motorcycle in front of his Sturgis dealership. Pappy’s life passion was motorcycling. He was a motorcycle dealer and race promoter, and is considered to be the founder of the Black Hills Classic Rally held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota. On August 14, 1938, Pappy along with his wife Pearl, and other members of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club held the community’s first motorcycle “Rally”, which attracted about 200 people. Today, hundreds of thousands motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the globe attend the Black Hills Classic. David Uhl is proud to present “Pappy” to honor his legacy on the 70th anniversary of this historic and influential motorcycle rally.

“With this year’s commemorative piece, I wanted to speak to the ’40s again and illustrate the spirit of the rally from the perspective of being young at heart and throwing caution to the wind . Back in the late 1940s, the average motorcycle enthusiast was a veteran returned from the war who was consistently drawn to the rallies for the flat out exitement and balls to the wall insanity of racing down a beach. Of course, everyone in the area would be affected by the sounds and the energy, especially young boys screaming their own echoes of the climate of exhiliration.”

David F Uhl
