KUSA - Local artist, David Uhl, was selected by the organizers of the Indianapolis 500 to draw the program cover for the 100th running of the race.

“It’s a real honor for me to do this,” Uhl said. “It’s been 100 years, and it’s an American iconic event, and I love this type of thing.”

Uhl was selected from artists all over the world vying for the honor. He spent many hours researching old photos and film to come up with just the right interpretation and drawing.

What’s next for Uhl? He’s working on a piece featuring Theodore Roosevelt and Harley Davidson.

As you probably know, licensed Harley-Davidson artist David Uhl has been painting for the better part of 13 years now. During that time, he has met countless people at shows, rallies and events throughout the world.

I’ve had the pleasure of being with him at many of these events and the one comment we hear more than any other is that David is “so good at painting people’s faces”. I personally agree with that statement and know that many artists have a difficult time with this.

Because of his mastery in this area, at each event David is asked how much it would cost to commission an original painting — of a wife on her motorcycle, perhaps a married couple on their bikes, someone’s children, fathers, mothers, pets — you name it, he’s been asked to paint it. Unfortunately, many people cannot afford his work because of the time (and cost) associated with painting a large piece with full side view of a motorcycle — with all of the detail required.

With the holidays fast approaching, David will be devoting some of his time to complete a limited number original oil paintings, custom commissioned portraits at extremely reasonable prices. In order to keep the prices down, his only stipulation is that he won’t be able to paint an entire motorcycle in a piece — perhaps part of a bike, along with a person, etc.

Given that his Harley-Davidson originals fetch upwards of $80,000, this is a tremendous offer. These will all be beautiful oil on canvas, portraits of one person and the cut-off date will be December 1 for Christmas delivery. He will only be doing a limited number of these and will complete them in the order that we receive firm commitments. If you are considering more than one person or something that may take more time than an individual portrait, we are asking that you email image ideas for his consideration. Once the final setting is agreed to, we can give you a firm quote.

“Bake” features Erwin G. “Cannonball” Baker, who began racing motorcycles in 1908. He was famous for making 143 motorcycle rides across the United States totaling about 5,500,000 miles (8,850,000 km), starting way back in 1914. His first cross-country trip was on an Indian motorcycle and took a whopping 14 days. He was a legendary racer (cars & motorcycles) and would later become the first commissioner of NASCAR. An inductee in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame since 1998, he died of a heart attack in 1960 in Indianapolis. David placed him in front of the Santa Monica pier (where this year’s endurance run ended) and painted in the “Kitty Hawk to Santa Monica” reference as well.

“Winner’s Table”, a beautiful still-life painting, includes the bronze sculpture that was crafted by Jeff Decker as a first-place award for the third winner. This piece features several references to the 2010 endurance run as well.

David also completed a third piece, titled “Into the Wind”, which features endurance run founder Lonnie Isam and his 1915 Harley-Davidson, with the Wright Brothers memorial in the Kitty Hawk background.

In David’s words, “I am honored to say that I was part of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run, being in Kitty Hawk at the beginning and Santa Monica at the end. I have to thank my friend Michael Lichter for helping me produce reference for these pieces, and riding the entire race backwards. My task was challenging but insignificant compared with those who actually completed the run. By far the most difficult aspect for me was trying to dream up a composition that reflected the variety of manufacturers that were entered in the run (Winner’s Table). The piece with Cannonball Baker was possible because the availability of a vintage photo of Steven Wright’s . I took some artistic license and put him in front of Santa Monica’s historic Pier in 1915. What a thrill to play a small part in the success of the event!”

David Uhl

David Uhl is recognized and highly respected for his unique style and vintage motorcycle paintings. David has been commemorating important motorcycle rallies and events, such as Sturgis and Daytona Bike Week since 1996. Fascinated by the motorcycle imagery from the early 1900s through the 1940s he applies many historical motorcycle scenes and stories to his art.

Michael Lichter is a world-class photographer whose work has focused on motorcycles and the biker culture for over 30-years. His work has illustrated over 1,000 articles on the subject, ten coffee table books, annual reports, advertising, billboards, brochures and posters. David and Michael will be scanning the entire event in Kitty Hawk keeping their eyes trained on some photographic aspect that will depict the excitement and spirit surrounding the start of the rally. Once the photographs are complete, they will split up. Michael will travel the entire route shooting from the back of a 1953 rigid Panhead (facing backwards) and David will travel back to the studio in Golden, Colorado where he will commence a personal race against time. His task will be to paint an original oil on canvas based on Lichter’s photographs, finish the painting before the end of the ride, fly to California with it and then present the original oil painting to the winner of Class 2.  For the winner of Class 3 David has already completed a historically relevant work featuring the namesake of the ride itself…E.G. “Cannonball” Baker. He will also be presenting the original oil of this painting to the winner of Class 3, the multi cylinder/multi speed class.

Additional information: Special limited edition prints of the two original David Uhl fine art paintings will be available for purchase through Uhl Studios. There are plans to do a third piece based on the many photographs Michael will actually be accumulating from the run, this piece will be determined after the ride itself is over and there is time for review.

A bronze sculpture of Elvis Presley on his Harley-Davidson Motorcycle was also presented by sculptor Jeff Decker.

David’s series of paintings will coincide with the release of the limited edition Elvis Presley 30th Anniversary Signature Collection Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, also unveiled at the festivities. The motorcycles themselves have already sold out.

They recently went to L.A. where Jay Leno took possession of the last available package. Jeff and David toured his garage and had a great time talking shop with Jay.

Part of their visit was captured on tape and is featured on Jay’s website. This was quite a challenging piece to compose.

The painting depicts a legendary event taking place at the Indianapolis 500 of 1912. A young Italian racer, Ralph DePalma, led the race by a huge margin only to be plagued by engine failure with only 3 laps to go. DePalma’s car expired on the last lap, however, the driver’s incredible persistence and sportsmanship drove him on. DePalma and his mechanic, Rupert Jeffkins, pushed the big grey Mercedes (#4) all the way across the finish line.

David recently attended the Indianapolis 500 speedway for the unveiling of his painting, “Glorious Failure,” and to enjoy the race and events.
