“It’s a real honor for me to do this,” Uhl said. “It’s been 100 years, and it’s an American iconic event, and I love this type of thing.”

Uhl was selected from artists all over the world vying for the honor. He spent many hours researching old photos and film to come up with just the right interpretation and drawing.

What’s next for Uhl? He’s working on a piece featuring Theodore Roosevelt and Harley Davidson.

As you probably know, licensed Harley-Davidson artist David Uhl has been painting for the better part of 13 years now. During that time, he has met countless people at shows, rallies and events throughout the world.

Portraits by David Uhl

I’ve had the pleasure of being with him at many of these events and the one comment we hear more than any other is that David is “so good at painting people’s faces”. I personally agree with that statement and know that many artists have a difficult time with this.

Because of his mastery in this area, at each event David is asked how much it would cost to commission an original painting — of a wife on her motorcycle, perhaps a married couple on their bikes, someone’s children, fathers, mothers, pets — you name it, he’s been asked to paint it. Unfortunately, many people cannot afford his work because of the time (and cost) associated with painting a large piece with full side view of a motorcycle — with all of the detail required.

With the holidays fast approaching, David will be devoting some of his time to complete a limited number original oil paintings, custom commissioned portraits at extremely reasonable prices. In order to keep the prices down, his only stipulation is that he won’t be able to paint an entire motorcycle in a piece — perhaps part of a bike, along with a person, etc.

Given that his Harley-Davidson originals fetch upwards of $80,000, this is a tremendous offer. These will all be beautiful oil on canvas, portraits of one person and the cut-off date will be December 1 for Christmas delivery. He will only be doing a limited number of these and will complete them in the order that we receive firm commitments. If you are considering more than one person or something that may take more time than an individual portrait, we are asking that you email image ideas for his consideration. Once the final setting is agreed to, we can give you a firm quote.

The specifics (all sizes are image sizes, the framing will be included unless specified):

8 x 10 — $2,500

9 x 12 — $3,600

12 x 16 — $4,600

16 x 20 — $6,000

18 x 24 — $8,000

Many of his sold-out prints sell in this price range, so this is a fabulous opportunity to own a David Uhl original at a great price! When you inquire, please let me know if this will be a surprise gift for a loved one, business associate, etc so that we don’t accidentally spoil the surprise!

David Uhl recently completed a whirlwind project for the Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run. He created two paintings relevant to the event, which were donated as first prizes to two of the class winners. His odyssey took him to the start of the event in Kitty Hawk, NC on September 10th. After collaborating with photographer Michael Lichter, David flew home to begin the first of the two paintings, which would need to be completed by the end of the event. On September 26th, David was happy to present the paintings to Bradford P. Wilmarth and Rick McMaken in Santa Monica, California.

“Bake” features Erwin G. “Cannonball” Baker, who began racing motorcycles in 1908. He was famous for making 143 motorcycle rides across the United States totaling about 5,500,000 miles (8,850,000 km), starting way back in 1914. His first cross-country trip was on an Indian motorcycle and took a whopping 14 days. He was a legendary racer (cars & motorcycles) and would later become the first commissioner of NASCAR. An inductee in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame since 1998, he died of a heart attack in 1960 in Indianapolis. David placed him in front of the Santa Monica pier (where this year’s endurance run ended) and painted in the “Kitty Hawk to Santa Monica” reference as well.

“Winner’s Table”, a beautiful still-life painting, includes the bronze sculpture that was crafted by Jeff Decker as a first-place award for the third winner. This piece features several references to the 2010 endurance run as well.

David also completed a third piece, titled “Into the Wind”, which features endurance run founder Lonnie Isam and his 1915 Harley-Davidson, with the Wright Brothers memorial in the Kitty Hawk background.

In David’s words, “I am honored to say that I was part of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run, being in Kitty Hawk at the beginning and Santa Monica at the end. I have to thank my friend Michael Lichter for helping me produce reference for these pieces, and riding the entire race backwards. My task was challenging but insignificant compared with those who actually completed the run. By far the most difficult aspect for me was trying to dream up a composition that reflected the variety of manufacturers that were entered in the run (Winner’s Table). The piece with Cannonball Baker was possible because the availability of a vintage photo of Steven Wright’s . I took some artistic license and put him in front of Santa Monica’s historic Pier in 1915. What a thrill to play a small part in the success of the event!”

We will be producing an exclusive print edition of each of the three images that can be viewed on the “Racing and Hill Climb” page. Each of these canvas giclee prints will be hand-signed and numbered by David and will come beautifully framed with a Certificate of Authenticity. Specifics are below:

“Bake” - 42 prints plus 4 Artist Proofs and 4 Hors d’ commerce

“Winner’s Table” - 42 prints plus 4 Artist Proofs and 4 Hors d’ commerce

“Into the Wind” - 12 prints

Each of the prints is priced at $795, a great value for David’s work. Given the historical significance and huge interest in this event, it is anticipated that these will go quickly! To reserve your print, please contact Greg Rhodes at 303-913-4840 or greg@uhlstudios.com

“Anyone who collects and restores these vintage motorcycles is preserving a piece of Americana that would have ordinarily been lost forever”.

The author’s first motorcycle was a Yamaha two-stroke, purchased when he was 18 years old, in New York City. Soon he discovered that a two-stroke didn’t quite exude the image he was after. More importantly he realized that riding a Yamaha, or for that matter any motorcycle in New York City, wasn’t conducive with a long, accident free life. Ultimately his educational pursuits took him in a direction where the frequent or even infrequent use of his motorcycle became a challenge. That avocation was put on hold.

It was not until the mid 1980’s when he settled in Denver and his life and career became more stable that he took up riding again, this time with a four stroke Suzuki 750 shaft-driven Intruder. While an excellent motorcycle, he realized that it too was missing something. Then one day in the late 80’s he entered a Harley-Davidson dealership and he caught the bug. He not only purchased a rider, but began his passion collecting first year antique Harley-Davidson motorcycles and all things vintage Harley-Davidson.

He has worked on and ridden all the motorcycles in the collection. In some cases doing the restoration alone or with his son Zach, or just adding some finishing touches to the bikes. “Collecting Harley-Davidson motorcycles is a passion” he says, “Unless you appreciate motorcycles they are just another piece of rusting metal”. He goes on to say “Anyone who collects and restores these vintage motorcycles is preserving a piece of Americana that would have ordinarily been lost forever”.

Numerous motorcycle models from the book are also featured on David Uhl’s paintings:
36 EL Knucklehead - “Rose”, The Women of Harley-Davidson; “Pinstriping”, Art of the Motorcycle
49 EL Hydra-Glide - “Custom Paint”, Art of the Motorcycle
1930 V - “Stella”, The Women of Harley-Davidson
1914 10 F - “Stranger in Town”, Sturgis Commemorative
1929 D - “Vivian Bales”, Historical Works

The book is now available for purchase through Uhl Studios.

On Friday, September, 2010, riders from across the country and their pre-1916 motorcycles will embark on a two-week odyssey from the East Coast to the West Coast in the Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run. David Uhl, in collaboration with Michael Lichter, is preparing an exciting surprise for the winners of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run’s Class Two and Class Three!

David Uhl

David Uhl is recognized and highly respected for his unique style and vintage motorcycle paintings. David has been commemorating important motorcycle rallies and events, such as Sturgis and Daytona Bike Week since 1996. Fascinated by the motorcycle imagery from the early 1900s through the 1940s he applies many historical motorcycle scenes and stories to his art.

Michael Lichter is a world-class photographer whose work has focused on motorcycles and the biker culture for over 30-years. His work has illustrated over 1,000 articles on the subject, ten coffee table books, annual reports, advertising, billboards, brochures and posters. Limited edition photographs from his archive have been exhibited in galleries and museums and are collected domestically and abroad. His commercial clients include Harley-Davidson, Allstate Insurance, Nikon, Metzeler Tires, Indian Motorcycles, S&S, Custom Chrome, WileyX and many other names from the motorcycle industry. While Michael is often traveling across America and overseas to capture his subjects, he continues to operate out of the same Boulder, Colorado studio he has maintained for 28-years. Samples of his work and more information can be found at www.lichterphoto.com.

Michael Lichter

David and Michael will be scanning the entire event in Kitty Hawk keeping their eyes trained on some photographic aspect that will depict the excitement and spirit surrounding the start of the rally. Once the photographs are complete, they will split up. Michael will travel the entire route shooting from the back of a 1953 rigid Panhead (facing backwards) and David will travel back to the studio in Golden, Colorado where he will commence a personal race against time. His task will be to paint an original oil on canvas based on Lichter’s photographs, finish the painting before the end of the ride, fly to California with it and then present the original oil painting to the winner of Class 2. For the winner of Class 3 David has already completed a historically relevant work featuring the namesake of the ride itself…E.G. “Cannonball” Baker. He will also be presenting the original oil of this painting to the winner of Class 3, the multi cylinder/multi speed class.

Additional information: Special limited edition prints of the two original David Uhl fine art paintings will be available for purchase through Uhl Studios. There are plans to do a third piece based on the many photographs Michael will actually be accumulating from the run, this piece will be determined after the ride itself is over and there is time for review.

Roger and Emily, photograph by Kim Cook

Roger and his wife Emily spontaneously joined us for a one day photo shoot for the new Uhl Works apparel catalog (www.uhlworks.com), adding a great vibe and fun to the day. They looked incredible and very natural wearing the new Uhl Works t-shirt designs.

Roger is recognized in the bike world as one of the best custom bike designer. Roger has built a number of incredible bikes and has always had a very creative and artistic approach. In 1984, he bought his first Harley - a 1984 Softail custom. He stripped it down to the frame, raked it, chromed it, painted it, etc. until it wasn’t even recognizable. Roger had many more “project bikes”, and in 1991 built the first Harley type custom bike to run a 170-17 rear tire. Roger pretty much decided at that point that there was nothing he hadn’t done to a stock Harley frame, and in 1992 began designing and building his own style and brand of motorcycle frames. He also invested in a CNC Mill and small lathe and started building his own billet components to go along with the frames.

People went wild when they saw Roger’s frames, and it was soon obvious that Roger’s hobby could turn into a full blown career. Roger’s creativity and design genius have produced many different styles of frames, parts and unbelievable motorcycles over the years including Roger’s signature design, BBW’s oil-in frame/drop seat style chassis which marked a revolutionary change in the style of custom motorcycles being offered to the general public. The designs were so unique that Roger Bourget obtained a U.S. Patent for it.

Roger is much respected in the industry, and his name is a trademark for high quality, performance oriented, uniquely styled motorcycles. We were very excited and thankful to have Roger and Emily part of our photo shoot project for Uhl Works.
