Glorious Failure

The cover of the 2008 Indianapolis 500 Official Program cover features an artistic re-creation of one of the most dramatic developments in the history of the Indianapolis 500.  In 1912, Italian-born Ralph DePalma broke down within sight of the finish after having led 196 of the 200 laps.  Stranded in turn 4 with just over a lap to go, DePalma and his riding mechanic, Rupert Jeffkins, got out and began to push their Mercedes in a spirited attempt to finish.  The arrived to complete 199 laps just a few minutes after second-place Joe Dawson had successfully unlapped himself from a five-lap deficit and gone on to lead the final two laps for the win.  To Dawson’s amazement, among the first to shake his hand was none other than DePalma himself.
